The AAAI-2002 Robot Rescue
نویسندگان
چکیده
is to challenge researchers to design useful robotic systems for urban search and rescue (USAR). The competition rules are written to simulate a real rescue response in a simulated disaster environment developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This article provides an overview of the current state of the art for USAR robotics, an overview of the AAAI-2002 Robot Rescue event, and a discussion of the future of the Robot Rescue event. ‘

This year’s Robot Rescue event was held in conjunction with the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and RoboCup at the colocated RoboCup and International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The year 2001 was the first year that the rescue event was part of RoboCup, and the second year that the event was held as part of the AAAI Robot Competition. The joint rules co...
متن کاملThe Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: A Marsupial Team for Urban Search and Rescue
We describe our entry in the AAAI 2002 Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) competition, a marsupial team consisting of a larger wheeled robot and several small legged robots, carried around by the larger robot. This setup exploits complimentary strengths of each robot type in a challenging domain. We describe both the hardware and software architecture, and the on-board real-time mapping which forms...
متن کاملA Pragmatic Approach to Robot Rescue: The Keystone Fire Brigade
The Keystone Fire Brigade is a robotic rescue team that has competed in the 2002 competitions in both Fukuoka (RoboCup) and Edmonton (AAAI). The key elements of our approach are emphasis on autonomy, vision-based computing, and implementation on inexpensive robot bases (e.g., toy cars). This paper describes our motivations in developing the Keystone Fire Brigade and describes the key elements o...
متن کاملA Modular Software Architecture for Heterogeneous Robot Tasks
Swarthmore’s entries to this year’s AAAI Mobile Robot competition won second place in the Urban Search and Rescue event and Third Place in the Robot Host competition. This article describes the features of Frodo and Rose, the two-robot team, and discusses their performance. The most important design feature that made the robots successful was a modular software design and communication interfac...
متن کاملHuman Detection by Tartan Swarm
Tartan Swarm was an autonomous, multi-robot entry in the 2002 Mobile Robot Urban Search and Rescue Competition. The robots were designed to be low-cost, adaptable, and disposable. Emphasis was given to human detection techniques, The design did not feature localization or mapping capability. In the competition, the robots may have detected bodies, but were unable to report location or success.
